The Synonym Finder by J.I. Rodale, Laurence Urdang, and Nancy LaRoche (Editors) Book ReviewBook ReviewBook ReviewBook ReviewBook Review
The Synonym Finder This reference contains over 1,000,000 (yes, a million) synonyms arranged alphabetically, including clearly labelled slang and other informal words and expressions, as well as rare, archaic, scientific and other specialized terms. This is undoubtedly the best thesaurus available: well laid out, incredibly easy to use, and with the largest selection of words and synonyms of any thesaurus available. If you're looking to buy your first thesaurus, this is thoroughly recommended. But do not buy the paperback edition; even if you're not a professional writer, you will find that you refer to this book so often that eventually a paperback copy would need replacing. And with almost 1,500 pages, it represents fantastic value for money too.

Homophones and Homographs: An American Dictionary by James B. Hobbs Book ReviewBook ReviewBook ReviewBook ReviewBook Review
This expanded third edition defines and cross-references 7,870 homophones and 1,554 homographs. As the most comprehensive compilation of American homophones (words that sound alike) and homographs (look-alikes), this latest edition serves well where even the most modern spell-checkers and word processors fail; although rain, reign, and rein may be spelled correctly, the context in which these words may appropriately be used is not obvious to a computer. It is a gold mine for students of English and for writers, journalists, and instructors, and is especially useful to those involved in linguistic and phonological research. The annotated bibliography - more than seven excellent pages in length - is a useful, critical guide to a very wide range of relevant dictionaries and commentaries available. It also contains pronunciation information and a helpful nine-page appendix. In addition, the unrivalled book is beautifully printed and bound. All round, a magnificent addition to any bookshelf.

Eight Ate A collection of original riddles, each with a homonym pair as the answer: bizarre bazaar, knight night, bare bear, foul fowl, etc. The entire book is filled with this type of word play: the riddle, with the answer in homonyms wonderfully illustrated by Giulio Maestro. The clever use of words makes for funny reading out loud, whilst the illustrations keep the attention of the children who are too young read, even though they may not fully understand the joke embedded in the homonyms. This book is a worthwhile addition to the library of the young reader. Very useful for teaching children the difference between words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and with such a fun book they should enjoy learning too.
